This business directory was born out of a planning process that started in November, 2003 to create comprehensive, sustainable change in North Lawndale. That planning process resulted in a document (also known as a the Quality of Life plan), which is a series of over 40 projects and programs that reflect a wide range of issues relevant to Lawndale residents and stakeholders such as: public education; re-entry of the formerly incarcerated; safety; employment; issues supporting youth; affordable housing; culture/ beautification/recreation; and entrepreneurship/commercial development. The directory is a project that grew out of the ideals of business minded stakeholders who reasoned that there would be more support of businesses by Lawndale residents if an easily accessible resource was available to the community. The process that started in the fall of 2003 was completed in December of 2005 and I learned some valuable lessons along the way. Most of those lessons were not about the directory at all, but about people and community. Now that this project is completed, my sincere hope is that we support it as a community by using it and ensuring its recreation.
